Abstract

An explanation is offered for the observed fact that for dinegative ions of coronene and 18-annulene the ground state is a singlet instead of a triplet. The explanation involves vibronic mixing of nearly degenerate singlet states, resulting in stabilization of one singlet with respect to the triplet state.
