Abstract

Infection with Vibrio fetus is a leading cause of placental necrosis and abortion in sheep and cattle. The organism only recently has been reported in humans in whom there is as yet no clear-cut clinical picture. Localized pustules, undulating fever, and gastrointestinal manifestations have all occurred, and the organism has been implicated in 2 cases of human abortion. Involvement of the central nervous system has not previously been described. A case of meningitis due to V. fetus in a 2-week-old premature infant is reported. The infant developed subdural effusions, probable abscesses, and cystic formation in the cerebral hemispheres. The disease terminated fatally, despite antibiotic therapy.
