Abstract

The lattice vibrations of a monatomic chain containing a substitutional impurity is investigated in detail, assuming a molecular model. The normal modes of a penta-atomic molecule, formed of the impurity and its neighboring host atoms, and vibrating in the potential field set up by the static lattice, bring out clearly the important properties of the defect lattice.
