Abstract

The application of IR and Raman Spectroscqpy to the study of the role of metal ions in biological systems has taken prominence during the last decade. Spectral changes caused by metal interactions, determination of molecular conformation and stacking interactions are some of the effects that can be studied by Raman spectroscopy from intensity measurements. The advantage of Raman Spectroscopy over other techniques is that one can study water solutions in conditions close to biological systems. Vibrational spectra of metal-nucleic acid systems provide information on the backbone chain conformations.
