Abstract

Raman and infra-red spectra of UCl 2− 6 and ThCl 2− 6 have been obtained from methyl cyanide solutions of their alkylammonium or alkylphosphonium salts. The fundamentals are assigned in terms of the molecular point group O h and their relation to vibrational progressions in the ultra-violet spectra is discussed. A force constant calculation indicates that UCl 2− 6 and ThCl 2− 6 have MCl bonds significantly stronger than those of PbCl 2− 6. The influence on the vibrational spectra of the incomplete ⨍-shell in UCl 2− 6 is also noted and discussed.
