Abstract

The Raman, infrared, and visible absorption spectra of synthetic tephroite, Mn/sub 2/SiO/sub 4/, have been measured. The bands observed in the vibrational spectra are assigned to the k approximately equal to 0 transverse optical modes of Mn/sub 2/SiO/sub 4/, and several longitudinal optical mode frequencies of ..nu../sub 3/ were estimated from features observed in transverse magnetic reflection spectra. The Raman active components of the internal modes of SiO/sub 4//sup 4 -/ do not appear to interact with the motions of Mn/sup 2 +/ ions, but the infrared components of ..nu../sub 2/ and ..nu../sub 4/ appear to be highly mixed with the external modes of the manganese sublattice.
