Abstract

The ir spectrum of liquid trimethyl thiophosphate has been recorded from 4000 to 33 cm −1. The Raman spectra of the liquid and the solid have been recorded and depolarization values have been measured for the liquid. Assignment of the fundamentals based on their frequency and depolarization values is given and discussed. A doublet was observed for v(PS), indicating the presence of at least two rotational isomers. One line of the Raman doublet disappeared upon freezing the compound, confirming the existence of isomers. The vibrational data are consistent with C 3 molecular symmetry for the isomer present in the solid. The Raman spectra of O,O-dimethyl phosphorochloridothioate have been recorded in the liquid and solid phases. Assignment of certain bands to different isomers have been made, based on the difference between the liquid-phase and solid-phase Raman spectra.
