Abstract

The vibrational excitation of a diatomic Morse-oscillator by collinear collision with a thrid atom is treated in the quantum-mechanical impulse approximation. A closed analytic expression for the transition probabilities P n′n is derived. It is discussed, how the P n′n will change as a function of the kinetic energy and of the energy transfer, if one passes over from harmonic to a Morse-oscillator. Some numerical results are given for the O + 2—He system.
