Abstract

Comparisons between classical and quantum-mechanical calculations on the vibrational states of the floppy KCN molecule using a realistic potential are made. Classical chaos is observed even below the quantum ground state. Analysis of the quantum modal structure, avoided crossings and level spacing distribution all point to an early onset of quantum chaos, although some quantum “sluggishness” is observed.
