Abstract

The paper presents two theoretical and two experimental investigations into the vibration of three varying thickness thin-walled steel circular cylinders. One of the investigations was in air and the other was while the vessels were subjected to various values of external water pressure. The theoretical analyses were carried out using the finite element method for both of the theoretical investigations. In the case of the theoretical underwater vibration investigation, the water motion was also mathematically modelled using the finite element method. Comparison between experiment and theory was excellent for the in-air investigation and very good for the in-water investigation.
