Abstract

Mechanical vibration characteristics of a freely suspended film of ferroelectric liquid crystal are investigated via measurements of the transmitted and reflected lights. The frequency spectrum of the mechanical vibration induced by applying electric field has several peaks corresponding to a resonance phenomenon. The mechanical vibration induced by irradiating an ultrasound in air has harmonic components in addition to the fundamental component of the carrier wave frequency of the ultrasound. The mechanical vibration is also observed under irradiation of ultrasound in the form of pulsed RF or amplitude-modulation (AM). The frequency components correspond to the eigenmodes of the resonance vibration. An AM ultrasound is demodulated by using the freely suspended film.
