Abstract

A finite element model is applied to the vibration and stability of thick rotating blades with a single edge crack. The effects of transverse shear deformation and rotatory inertia are taken into account. The model can satisfy all the geometric and natural boundary conditions of a thick blade. The stability problems of a cracked rotating blade subjected to non-conservative follower forces are considered. The effects of crack locations and sizes on the dynamic behavior of a blade are studied. It is found that a crack can change the vibrational behavior and stability characteristics of the system.
