Abstract

The free vibration characteristics of rectangular plates with discrete stiffeners are analyzed in this study. The analysis uses super plate and beam finite elements which have been specially constructed so that only a single element per bay or span is needed to model the response. Bending and in-plane effects as well as beam torsional and lateral bending motion are included in the model. Natural frequencies of some stiffened plate structures are calculated by the new formulation and these compare well with other published results. A detailed study of the frequencies and vibration mode shapes of a 4 × 4-bay stiffened plate is also presented.
