Abstract

The evolution of video recorders has lead to new techniques in signal processing. With the active phase shift circuit, a video playback system for VHS-standard has been created that guarantees a dramatic improvement in picture quality, even for highly stressed tapes, while keeping the full compatibility to the VHS-standard. This is realized by an active control of phase shifting: The upper FM carrier sideband-lost in the magnetic recording process - is reproduced in its original form. Low noise and high resolution, the opposing parameters relevant to picture quality, can thus both be regained to their mawimurn specifications. Apart from the phase shift, signal sparks and noise are suppressed by a level-dependant band pass, filtering the disturbed FM signal parts.
