The Fifth Award of the Vetlesen Prize was made to Francis Birch and Sir Edward C. Bullard on the evening of November 25, 1968, at Columbia University in New York City. Distinguished scientists from the entire nation attended this brilliant occasion, which climaxed an all‐day symposium on drilling and coring the deep sea. AGU was represented by Executive Director Waldo E. Smith. Birch, of Harvard University, and Bullard, of Cambridge University, were jointly honored for their outstanding work in solid‐state physics and fundamental geophysics, which has contributed to our understanding of major tectonic processes.
