Abstract

The remains of a painted register from the Romanesque period recently discovered in the nave of the parish church of Primelles, south of Bourges, illustrate a cycle of Genesis scenes. Though very faded, the scenes relate episodes of the sin of Adam and Eve including their expulsion from Paradise. The iconography can be compared to that of Carolingian bibles produced in Tours but also involves new elements relating to the Apocryphal narratives. In styles, these paintings, likes the ones in the sanctuary of the same church before 1949, are closely related to those in the church at Nohan-Vicq, some thirty-five kilometers away.
