Abstract
Summary Film contact angles have been measured for films as thick as 600 A on solutions of sodium dodecyl and tetradecyl sulfates alone, and with sodium or lithium chlorides, by analyzing laser diffraction pattern according to the theory of Princen and Frankel. Angles as small as 8′, corresponding to less than 2×10 −4 erg cm −2 in the depth of the free energy minimum stabilizing the film, could be determined. Although self consistent, these energies deviate by up to an order of magnitude in both directions from theoretical anticipation and for some LiCl systems also from previous experiments. It is therefore suggested that long range forces which determine the contact angle may be strongly influenced by adventitious impurities not yet under experimental control.
