Abstract

We propose an optical configuration of transflective liquid crystal cells in which liquid crystal of positive dielectric anisotropy is driven by the lateral electric field. Initially, liquid crystal molecules are aligned vertically for a good dark state. With lateral electric field, they are reoriented parallel to the field. By optimizing the electrode structure and using cap-dividing method, we matched electro-optic characteristics of the reflective part and the transmissive part. We achieved a transflective liquid crystal cell with wide-viewing angle in single cell gap.
