Abstract
This paper will briefly discuss vertical transportation in modern metro stations. The selected stations for review are London Underground Limited's Jubilee Line Extension, United Kingdom, and the Land Transport Authority's North East Line, Singapore. The discussion will include modes of vertical transportation, planning and provision of vertical transportation, design life and technical specifications, capital and whole life cycle cost. The paper concludes that modern metro stations use a large number of escalators to transport passengers through the stations which are complimented by a lift service for physically impaired passengers and those with heavy luggage or pushchairs.
