Abstract
A study of the vertical distribution of phytoplankton was carried out at the end of the rainy season (October–November), when wind activity is lower and the probability for phytoplankton stratification is enhanced. Samples were taken every other day at 0, 0.5, 1.0 m and, thereafter, for every meter up to the bottom. The number of individuals and their biomass were determined for each sampling depth and expressed as wet weight and chlorophyll-a, respectively. The results indicate that there were no significant differences (ANOVA one way, P<0.05) with regard to the vertical distribution of phytoplankton biomass over the 15 m of the water column. This result reflects the polymictic condition of Lake Xolotlan (Managua).
