Abstract

Cities are highly affected by the rapid urbanization. One of the reasons behind rapid pace of urbanization is from rural to urban migration. Industries, trade and commercial activities, and education centers available in the city attract the rural population. The growing urban population is creating tremendous pressure on the growth of the city and expanding the city limit in all aspect of development in the different direction. Dehradun city is not any more different in this regard. Dehradun being the capital city of Uttarakhand State, it witnesses the era of rapid urbanization. This has led the urban growth of the city beyond the municipal limits; and consequently increase the backwash effects, such as congestion, slums, environmental degradation, etc. Vertical development is desired to limit the urban sprawl on one hand, and for the sustainable development of the city, on the other. This study focuses on the vertical development and its need for the city, and conclude with the significance of vertical development in the city.
