Abstract

Silicon-Integrated Lasers In article number 1700206, Sulakshna Kumari and co-workers experimentally demonstrate a hybrid vertical-cavity silicon-integrated laser (VCSIL) with in-plane emission into a silicon nitride (SiN) waveguide. The inset shows the optical micrograph of the fully processed VCSIL. A weak SiN grating is placed inside the cavity to couple the vertically amplified light inside the cavity into an in-plane SiN waveguide. The grating also sets the polarization of the lasing output and provides transverse mode control.
