Abstract

Defects in the head and neck resulting from ablation of oral cancer frequently lead to disabling functional and cosmetic deformities. Rehabilitation of patients with oral cancer can be an emotionally and technically challenging endeavour. Selection of the donor tissue is clearly dependent upon the defect that is to be reconstructed. The donor tissue should be of sufficient bulk and pliability to facilitate re-establishing contour and function. Temporalis muscle flap provided profuse well vascularized and adequate tissue bulk for the obliteration of total maxillectomy defects and coverage of surface defects where as for correcting aesthetic units of the face, temporal island flaps proved to be a useful source of tissue. Temporal flaps hold a great promise for the reconstruction of various maxillofacial defects owing to its good blood supply, relative ease in harvest and proximity to the facial structures. This presentation aims to evaluate the use of temporal flaps in reconstruction of orofacial defects following the ablative cancer surgeries operated in Craniofacial Unit, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, S.D.M. College of Dental Sciences, Dharwad from year 2005 to 2007.
