Abstract

Lauren V. Ackerman coined the name verrucous carcinoma (VC) for an uncommon low-grade squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity. It is characterized by a slowly enlarging warty tumor with a locally destructive behavior and minimal if any metastasis. Through the years similar tumors have been described in other locations. According to the anatomic localization, four types are now recognized: (1) VC of the oral cavity known as Ackerman’s tumor or oral florid papillomatosis; (2) VC of the anogenital area also known as giant condyloma of Buschke and Lowenstein or warty squamous cell carcinoma; (3) VC of the soles also known as epithelioma cuniculatum (EC); and (4) VC at other sites.
