Abstract

Verrucaria igii Harada sp. nov. (lichenized Ascomycotina, Verrucariaceae) is de- scribed on the basis of a specimen from riverside rocks in western Honshu, Japan. It is distin- guished from closely related V. aquatilis by larger spores, larger involucrellum, and brownish thallus. During my course of taxonomic work on the li- chen family Verrucariaceae in Japan, I made a col- lecting trip to Okayama-ken, western Honshu in 1994. This collection includes many specimens of freshwater species of Verrucaria, one of which is an undescribed species. In this paper, it is described as Verrucaria igii Harada sp. nov., dedicated to the late Mr. Chuji Igi who was the leader of a local bryological society in Okayama and arranged part of this collecting trip.
