Abstract

This text argues that the materials and techniques of Vermeer’s paintings largely account for their “aesthetic effect.” This notion works in opposition to many art historical descriptions of the work (and the work of other artists) which tend to disregard the non-narrative and materialist elements of the construction in favor of transcendent and idealist analysis.
