Abstract

In literary history, the name of Verlaine is usually associated with the concept of Decadent But the content of his lyrical writing is not completely covered by that definition. It did not reflect only the reactionary aspects of Decadence (antisocial qualities, extreme individualism, moods of despair, eroticism, mysticism). Verlaine wrote groups of lyrical poems that had their roots in the tradition of Romanticism and at the same time opened new paths for the development of lyrical poetry.
