Abstract

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a software-based tool that has evolved over six decades and currently, there are different GIS software's in the market offering this sophisticated technology. GIS has a wide range of applications and is used in varied professional fields. Landscape architects were amongst the earliest users of geographic information systems traditionally. [1]Particularly for the field of Landscape architecture and planning, GIS is an important tool for site assessment. This forms a basis for strategic landscape planning, design, and management. From the earlier research conducted, there is evidence that GIS is underused in the realm of landscape architecture and related disciplines. Though recognized as a useful tool for mapping and planning, the potential of GIS is often still underutilized due to a lack of awareness and prejudice.[2] In India, The professional field of Landscape Architecture and Planning is developing and evolving at a very fast pace. This paper aims to find out the current scenario concerning the use of GIS particularly by Indian landscape architects, designers, and planners, working worldwide. The available literature study findings will be verified with the survey research conducted, to understand whether GIS is underutilized by Indian landscape architects too;and if yes, whether the reasons are similar to earlier literature study. The survey findings are based on questionnaire-answers by 120 Indian professionals from the field of landscape architecture, planning, etc. working in different countries. This survey was conducted between October and November 2019. This study will help create awareness in GIS-software designers, GIS-software tutors, landscape professionals and academicians alike. This can further be useful in GIS software evolution and a better outreach of GIS to professionals related to the field of landscape architecture and planning in India as well as worldwide.
