Abstract

This study presents data analysis concerning verbs of motion ir go and vir come, in Portuguese and English with emphasis on Portuguese. The data form a lexical network with internal structure by virtue of deictic principles. The theoretical background relates to cognitive semantics. The central idea is that language use reflects the way we see the world. Portuguese language instructors and learners will gain insight into the two domains that interfere with the use of these verbs-space and point of reference of the interlocutors. Also a source for practice in skills such as adverbs of place aqui here, ai there-where the interlocutor is, ali there-medial distance, la there, often used with verbs of motion.
