Abstract

This article discusses the “V + (NP) + say” structure in Colloquial Singaporean English. The first verb (V) is restricted to verbs of speaking such as tell, scold, criticise or communication verbs such as write, fax, etc. Illustrations of parallels with a similar structure in Chinese are given. The article also shows variations in the structure, reflecting both substrate and superstrate influences. In addition, functions as well as variations in the use of the structure by advanced and less proficient English-knowing bilinguals are discussed.
