Abstract

Ponderosa pines baited with the synthetic attractants exo-brevicomin and frontalin plus host resin were successfully attacked by Dendroctonus adjunctus Blandford. In the presence of verbenone, attractive portions cut from these trees were less attractive to D. adjunctus and more attractive to Hylurgops planirostris (Chapuis). Verbenone may be useful as a protectant for individual trees or in broadcast applications to prevent buildup of D. adjunctus populations.
