Abstract

Previous experiments on transposition and reversal-shift have suggested that young children's verbalizations do not control their overt choice behavior. The purpose of the present experiments was to determine if overt verbalization elicited by instruction during training would control the choice during a transposition test and to determine if the amount of verbal control was a function of age level. The results indicated that the verbalization during training did control the amount of transposition in the two groups of older children but that very young children's choice is not controlled by their verbalization.
