Abstract

Illustrative applications of a new sample introduction method to mass spectrometry (MS), termed Venturi electrospray ionization (VESI), are described. VESI can be performed with any mass spectrometer fitted with a normal commercial ESI source and is easily implemented with just the help of Venturi self-pumping already available in such sources. This feature makes direct MS analysis via VESI-MS readily available, while providing a very simple way to introduce a sample to an ESI mass spectrometer. Working as a miniature vacuum cleaner, VESI sucks analyte solutions directly to the ESI interface, in which pre-formed ions are directly transferred to the gas phase, thus providing immediate fingerprinting MS characterization of chemical mixtures for a multitude of applications.
