Abstract

Thioridazine HCl (Mellaril) is a widely used psychotropic agent. Its broad spectrum of clinical application, combined with its distinguishing pharmacological properties, have contributed significantly to its popularity. In 1969, thioridazine ranked seventh in sales for all prescription drugs. Diazepam (Valium) and chlordiazepoxide (Librium) were the only psychotropics with higher sales. During the past several years we have treated a wide variety of psychiatric disorders with thioridazine and have felt favorably about its clinical efficacy. Thioridazine is distinguished from other major tranquilizers by its soporific effect and low incidence of extrapyramidal phenomena, agranulocytosis, and hepatitis(1,2,3) Cohen reported a lower incidence of induced seizures, compared with other phenothiazines(1).
