Abstract

1. 1. During the decline of oxygen tension Mytilus edulis either regulated (regulators) or failed to regulate (conformers) oxygen consumption. 2. 2. Ventilation rate, and the frequency and amplitude of heat beat, increased at slightly reduced oxygen tension. 3. 3. At low pO 2 ventilation rate and heart frequency declined, with increased amplitude of heart beat. 4. 4. The ventilation: relative perfusion ratio decreased with declining pO 2 in regulators but remained constant in conformers. 5. 5. It is suggested that regulation of oxygen consumption at reduced oxygen tension is based on control of the ventilation: perfusion ratio.
