Abstract

A fixed home garden ventilated plastic row cover system was designed and tested. The system provided frostprotection, provided freeze protection when ambient temperatures dropped 2C (3 to 4F) below safe temperatures, andeliminated the need to remove the row covers during bright sunny days. The system could be operated from a single householdelectrical circuit. The system covered six 6.1 m (20 ft) rows.

During a fullscale test of the system, the observed temperature rises on clear spring days averaged 0.3C (0.5F) higherthan the predicted temperature rises. The largest temperature rise being about 9C (16F) above the ambient air temperature.Ambient temperatures never dropped below freezing during the test period. No apparent damage to plants occurred due tohigh or low temperatures. The system was capable of warming the air temperatures under the row covers by 2.4C (4.3F)when freezing temperatures were a threat to the crops. It was concluded the designed system met all the design criteria.
