Abstract

Since 1966 a group of colleges in North Carolina have been annually obtaining an across-the-board discount from book jobbers from firm orders, and in some instances discounts on standing orders. These discounts are offered by the jobbers based on their perception of the market potential of the collective buying power of these institutions. The agreement of the libraries to endorse a jobber or jobbers for a fiscal year is annually reviewed, with primary emphasis in the review process being placed on service and performance of the jobber. This approach achieves more than discount for firm order monographs because it provides an opportunity for several levels of interchange between acquisitions librarians and vendor representatives.
