Alvarez teaches Latin American politics, race and gender politics, and social movements at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where she directs the Center for Latin American, Caribbean and Latino Studies. Since the 1980s, she has been connected with feminist, women's, antiracist, and social justice movements in Brazil, Latin America, and globally, while conducting research on and with them.
