Abstract

In agreement with earlier observations, an arc discharge in a transverse magnetic field was found to be always accompanied by a high-velocity gas flow in the j×B̄ direction. By means of a temperature probe and a calibrated dragmeter the velocity of this arc wind was measured for several magnetic fields and various distances above the arc path. The maximum velocity was found to be between 3.5×103 and 7.0×103 cm/sec for magnetic fields of 520 and 2000 G, respectively.
