Abstract

Steep spillways are being designed and installed all over the world, due to their ability to discharge ∞ood. There are two distinct regions of the ∞ow important for spillway design, the fully developed region where air is entrained into the ∞ow, and the developing region where air is not entrained. It is important to understand the velocity distribution of the developing region because of a greater potential for cavitations damage. A detailed analysis of the turbulent velocity proflles is made, including mean values for the parameters of the complete turbulent velocity proflle in the turbulent rough ∞ow regime, given by the log-wake law. The results show that the log-wake law can be applicable for describing the velocity proflles over steep spillway. As indicated by the wake parameter, the spillway slope, the roughness of the spillway and the acceleration parameter afiected the outer region of the boundary layer. The origin shift is variable at difierent stations along the spillway ∞ow.
