Digital fieldwork: the benefit of online research It is important to consider social media as a serious and useful source for anthropological research. The use of online resources offers practical advantages, such as the ease with which data can be collected and stored, and the fact that the researcher can enter the online lives of respondents anonymously and unseen. Because performances on social media give particular insight into how users want to be seen, the question arises as to the extent to which we should consider these statements as a serious source of research. However, knowledge of the fact that users want to profile themselves in a certain way is valuable in itself. The fact that the virtual ‘street’ has become a reality in itself even makes online research indispensable.
