Abstract

The demographic change in Puerto Rico is a social reality according to the US Census Bureau. In 2014 the population of old people represented 22.7% of people in the island, occupying the number 34 in comparison with 229 countries. The creation of public policies to respond to the needs of old people is essential. To promote independence in the elderly is a tool for prevention and to improve their quality of life can result in better public policies. To integrate in this analysis the old people voices and multidisciplinary vision including social work, will be successful to the effort of responding effectively to the basic needs for old people.
