Abstract

ABSTRACT Starting with a 2-dimensinonal model for a road structure, we derive the expressions for the dynamic strain, stress, and displacement in the road structure by considering together pavement material properties, truck dynamic characteristics, and road surface profile characteristics in a unified framework. The change of the road surface profile is then predicted according the number of cumulative truckloads exerted on top of the road surface using three coupled difference equations. The evolution of surface profiles can be applied to predict the present serviceability index of roads, one of the most important indices for road design, rehabilitation and maintenance. The model can be further applied to assess the effect of axle loads applied by acceleration testing facilities. Moreover, the AC concrete material characteristics can be fed into the model for simulating its field performance.
