Abstract
Terminal growth and increment studies have been conducted on many woody plants with particular reference to silvicultural applications, 1)lut few studies have been made of plants sul)jected to xeric conditions. The present report deals with phases of the vegetative and floral growth of ocotillo (Foifqulicria splendens Engelm.) as representative of long-lived desert slhrubs on which growth measuremnents could easily be made. Several investigators have studied ocotillo. Robinson ('04) and Humphrey ('311, '35) outlined the manner of petiolar spine formation. The anatomy of the woody stem has been described by Scott ('32), and flower development and eml)ryology have been investigated by Johansen ('36).
