Abstract

Summary Peatlands are at present one of the most important objects for nature conservancy. To guarantee the survival of all the different types of these wetlands, which are characteristic for the large landscape units of Europe, an international strategy has to be worked out, based on knowledge of the condition and distribution of mires all over the continent. In addition, special investigations on the most valuable sites must be carried out to yield detailed information about their development, history, ecology, vegetation and wildlife. To do this as an example for a good conservation strategy, the arguments and facts mentioned above were collected and worked out in one of the most outstandig peatland regions of Austria, the Granit- and Gneis Plateau, which is the southernmost part of the Central European Highlands.
