We found that Die Walkiire was down for that evening.... I arrived just in time to hear that wonderful passage for strings when Sieglinde offers Siegmund the cup. This was my first introduction to later Wagner, but I experienced no surprise, but rather that strange certainty that I had heard it all before. There was a feeling of recognition as of meeting an old friend which comes to us all in the face of great artistic experiences. I had the same experience when I first heard an English folk-song, when I first saw Michael Angelo's Day and Night, when I suddenly came upon Stonehenge, or had my first sight of New York City-the intuition that I had been there already. -Ralph Vaughan Williams'
