Abstract
Peptides are chemical signals among different cell populations (1,2). Brain endothelial cells are specific targets for peptide hormones (3,4,). Vasopressin (VP) binds specifically to brain microvessels (5,6), and there is strong evidence that blood-borne VP affects the transport of neutral amino acids (NAA) across the BBB of rats via a receptor-mediated mechanism. After intracarotid injection of VP, a decline of the maximum velocity, Vmax, and an increase of the affinity, 1/Kt, of the transporter for large NAA was observed (7,8). Accordingly, intravenous injection of VP decreased the PS-product of NAA (9, 10).
