Abstract

A new assay method employing the vasconstrictor activity of topically applied steroids is described. The speed, simplicity and reproducibility of the method as a screening system for large numbers of compounds is stressed. The performance of 6 steroids is presented and the statistically significant superiority of fluclorolone acetonide over betamethasone-17-valerate, fluandrenalone, beclomethasone propionate, flucortolone caproate and flumethasone pivalate clearly demonstrated. Further possible applications of the assay system such as the croton oil test and vasoconstrictor activity occluded and unoccluded are suggested.
