Abstract

The war diaries of the Russian artist Vasily Dmitrievich Polenov, fully published for the first time, is a unique source of historical, ethnographic and cultural knowledge about the Serbian-Turkish conflict, in which Polenov took part in the fall of 1876. The study of the manuscripts makes it possible through the eyes of a painter to see different sides of Serbia’s confrontation with the conquerors, the mood among participants of the war, national features of the life of the Serbs. The diaries kept in the Department of Manuscripts of the State Tretyakov Gallery are accompanied by rich pictorial material, parts of which are kept in the Tretyakov Gallery, the Polenovo Museum-Reserve and the Russian Museum.
