Vascularized Bone Grafting for Bone Defects after Removal of Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors in the Limb-Saving Procedures

Abstract

Preoperative and postoperative chemotherapies and operative techniques have been developed to control malignant bone and soft tissue tumors [1, 2]. In addition, Enneking et al. reported that a surgical staging system of musculoskeletal sarcoma had a high degree of compliance and accuracy in both surgical planning and end result studies [3]. Limb-saving procedures have been attempted for malignant tumors in the extremities, and it was found that radical oncological surgery is not always incompatible with the preservation of limb functions [4–6]. On the other hand, vascularized bone graftings (VBGs) have been applied to various orthopedic diseases, of which many excellent results have been reported [7–10]. We have performed reconstructive surgery by VBGs for bone defects after wide removal of malignant bone and soft tissue tumors in the extremities. The following is a report on the operative procedures of VBGs and the limb functions regained after such surgery.
